Guys do your ‘do

Friday, November 20th, 2009

In keeping with the holiday party theme this week, Tim is giving the guys a hint on hair.

Some guys maintain their coif every day, but for others, this is an excuse to get fancied up. Here’s the product…

Artec Textureline Material (Pliable Mattifying Paste): WTF!  Seriously, the name for the shit I put in my hair is more complicated than the list of ingredients on the side of the package.  I used to use Bumble & bumble Sumotech but then my prettyologist (big up Lorraine) left Rudy’s to start her own salon.  She chose this L’Oreal product as a suitable replacement for Sumotech and she gets it at her beauty supply store and then sells it to me when I come in for a cut.  Essentially it is $10 per can cheaper than Sumotech and does the same thing.  Those who know me, know I love my hair.  I’m willing to spend money on cuts and product for the simple reason that I consider myself lucky to still have hair.  Big up to my bald brothers!  This stuff gives you a little bit of shine, a bit of hold but doesn’t leave your hair crispy.  Seriously, nothing says cheap hair product like a stiff head.  Guys, it looks like you’re from South King Co. or a Gotti brother if the hair is crispy and it doesn’t have to be that way. – Tim

Hot Buttered Rum

Friday, November 20th, 2009

What’s a holiday party without a holiday beverage? Certainly not the party it should be.

Here is one of my personal favorites, Hot Buttered Rum – a sweet, warm sensation.

1 cup sugar
1 cup brown sugar
1 cup butter
2 cups vanilla ice cream
rum
water
nutmeg
1. Combine sugar, brown sugar and butter in a 2-quart saucepan. Cook over low heat, stirring occasionally, until butter is melted (6-8 min).

2. Combine cooked mixture with ice-cream in a large mixing bowl, and beat at medium speed, scraping bowl often until smooth (1-2 min). Store refrigerated up to 2 weeks or frozen up to one month.

3. For each serving, fill one-quarter of a mug with mixture, add one ounce rum (or more!!) and three-quarters of a cup of boiling water. Sprinkle with nutmeg.

clutch

You can’t just lug around that old bag you carry about during the day to a fancy party! But you know you can’t leave home without your lipgloss, cellphone, and credit cards. Finishing touches are vital.

This is a perfect little holiday clutch from Banana Republic. Spread the cheer!

Serving with a smile

Wednesday, November 18th, 2009

So, you are the host. You are not up for cleaning glassware or chancing the loss of your beloved dishes. BUT, using disposable grates at your conscience.

Solution! If you don’t already know this, there are tons of resources for biodegradable, compostable, earth happy serving ware. Now you can live with yourself.

Great resources for you:

-Ecowise

-Trellis Earth

-Pap Corn (I really like this…stylish! Downside is that you have to contact people in a foreign country)

-greeplanetparties (another fave and easier to order)

-Worldcentric

gold dress

This is what you want to wear to a party for a Wow Effect.shoe

The other day I gave a super cute, but more conservative party look. Today? Not so much. This is sexy to the max and a visual treat certain to turn a few heads. Plus, it is made out of organic hemp silk (new to me!) so you can feel a little more green for your holiday festivities.

And I recommend not going conservative with the shoe either. Black is nice, but colour is better. A luscious turquoise? Or these with the animal print.

So step out and  get some looks! You deserve it. It’s the holiday season!

Set the mood

Tuesday, November 17th, 2009

If you are throwing a party, you know that the most significant thing aside from food and beverage is ambience. Dimming lights and the scattering of candles creates a perfect sexy warmth. Tea lights are perfect because they are super cheap and can be found anywhere. And these alabaster tea light holders are perfect for any setting. And hey, if you are a guest, what a great host gift!

*Although you may be tempted to not put your tea lights in holders, I don’t recommend that. I’ve seen fires break out at parties because the metal gets to hot and people get careless. A little flame coverage can make a big difference.

Movie Star Eyes

Tuesday, November 17th, 2009

I like to switch around eyeshadow types depending upon my mood, the occasion, and what I am wearing. The other day before work I dug out some Bobbi Brown in a blueish colour that I hadn’t tried in awhile. Holy moley! I had totally forgotten. I felt so glamorous I had to go change my clothes.

Wowza. I am now once again inspired. This eyeshadow would be the most perfect way to go for a night out on the town (or at someone’s house party). It was elegant while making a subtle statement. And it has a bit of a metallic glow, which I feel takes it even more into an evening look.

My current favorites in the award winning Bobbi Brown Metallic Long Wear Cream Eyeshadow are the Antique Gold and Chrome Patina, though it is hard to narrow.

rockefeller dress

So I came upon this website the other day that has tons and tons of wonderful things. I swear that everything I looked at just screamed HOLIDAY PARTY!

I love this silky black dress and these fancy flats (I prefer them in yellow). Classic and refined, yet quite stylish and on top of the lastest fashion. Sure to be a hit!

And one brilliant thing about both of these items is that they can easily be warn again in a variety of ways all year around. Perfection.

GleePeek – Treasure hunting

Monday, November 16th, 2009

Last week’s theme week was so fun, I thought I’d do another this week. My inspiration comes from something that ends up on pretty much everyone’s mind at some time or other at this point in the year…holiday parties.

Thanksgiving can be a fabulous party (I know that’s what I always try for), and no matter your religious or non-religious affiliation, there are many fetes to throw or attend. So we get a GleePeek look into an appropriate favorite of Jacynth’s to kick this Holiday Party theme week off…

Clothes: I live by the belief that somebody’s trash is another person’s treasure.  That’s why I do the majority of my shopping at Crossroads.  You can find anything from seven jeans (in good shape) to a Members Only jacket. Rocks! – Jacynth

Whether or not you have a Crossroads near you, any old second-hand store will do. At a time of year when budgeting is of utmost concern, a quick trip to a Goodwill or a consignment store can land you some amazing finds. I know I’ve scored some very sweet dresses, tops, and accessories that have made some party rounds. Can’t argue the price!
