GleePeek – Keeping up appearances.

Tuesday, September 8th, 2009

I had to go around the globe to South Africa to meet my friend Deanna (her etsy store featured here). We were fortunate enough to study abroad together with a fabulous group of students. And now, through the power of the world wide web, we have reconnected. Deanna is now located in Oakland, CA, and was kind enough to give me a few of her favorite products. Her GleePeek product for this week is…

I have had Truth Serum product personally recommended to me not too long ago, and I am so excited that Deanna had it as her pick. Not only is it good for your skin, it is formulated without parabens, pthalates, and other nasty things. I’m sold!

If this bag could talk

The last item on my birthday wish list before signing off for the weekend is from my friend Deanna’s Etsy store, Nostalgia Handbags. She specializes in making the old new again with her vintage bags, and this fun little number is one of my faves.

I am just totally picturing the previous owner and her stylish, socialite ways. Look at that sleek white, the convertible gold handles. I think you know what I mean. Alas, it is a vintage classic-a bag Audrey Hepburn could have carried around in her young iconic years, or maybe Kelly or Brenda or Donna on 9-0 back in the day. It transcends. And I want it. Check out Deanna’s prices…can’t be beat!

*Have a great long Labor Day weekend. Monday’s GleePeek will be from Deanna, so check back then.

Bless the dress

I have been eyeing this piece for awhile, and since I get to make my birthday wish list this week, I may as well put it on there too. Cute, right?

It has that late summer, super comfy look. Retro fabric with that blue that is so in right now. Yeah, I could wear this.

A Caribbean style snow day

Thursday, September 3rd, 2009

Just sitting around the house waiting for this tropical storm I was promised. Right now we are fluctuating between 2mph wind gusts and slightly cloudy/slightly sunny skies. I want rain! I know you all can understand…one of those days where you just get to stay at home, cozy up and be lazy because the weather is just too nasty to go out and be productive.

We’ll see if it monoclecomes. Maybe later this afternoon, but in the meantime, I’ve come up with a super ‘happy birthday to me’ gift. A subscription to Monocle magazine. I could just snuggle up here and read from cover to cover for an enjoyable few hours.

My savvy architect cousin, Ryan, introduced me to this fine read, and I fell instantly in love. Monocle is British and pretty much is the most cutting-edge read I have come across. Articles span the globe and talk about design innovations, business, movers and shakers of all sorts. You almost have to see it to believe it, because it really runs the gamut on amazing avant-garde subject matter. It gave me a jolt because I realized that there was this huge part of life that I was missing – that is truly how I felt.

I suggest getting one issue to see if you’re interested, because a year subscription is 75 pounds ($150ish American dollars). Pricey, but I am serious…awesome.

So wish me luck on this weather thing, because I may be lazy no matter what. It is just better to have an excuse, you know?

Thar she pillows

Is it okay to go with the nautical theme if you aren’t near a somewhat sizeable body of water? I am thinking not, but then, I’ve lived no more than 5 minutes from an ocean for the past 13 or 14 years. It is perfectly acceptable for me to want to incorporate these awesome Thomas Paul pillows into my life due to my proximity, but you landlubbers…not so sure for you.

I am an absolute sucker for decorative home goods. I love switching things out and redesigning depending on the season and my mood. Thomas Paul is certainly one of my favorite homegoods/décor designers. He’s accessible and diverse, so if you can’t pull off the nautical, there are still a bounty of options. These pillows just happen to be his latest thing to strike me, and are definitely on my gift wish list.

The elephant in the room

I am not ashamed. I love the kitsch. And when kitsch happens to be from the highly collectible designer Jonathan Adler, a better name for it might be ‘playful chic’.

Jonathan Adler has been a huge name in design for years. His classic looks are easily recognizable, and he is ever-evolving and expanding his brand.

For the last holiday season, I decided to get my mother one of his classic pieces. It was beautifully packaged and a HUGE hit. Sculptural, playful and beautiful, much like the Jonathan Adler Darjeeling Teapot that I have been coveting. It is my absolute favorite. I’m not even sure I would use it for tea. It is just nice to look at, and a collector’s item in the years to come.

For my edgier, badass self

Tuesday, September 1st, 2009

Linea Pelle is a wonder with leather. Handbags, belts, and a rocking line of cuff bracelets that are a bit industrial/punk. Now the chance of this working on my scrawny little arm is minimal, but I do LOVE. Putting a little badass accessory with a feminine dress or top sounds like divine inspiration to me. Plus, I guess the whole biker look is a top Fall 2009 trend. Tough-chic, here I come!

hatI am going to go ahead and get this hat for myself whether I get it for my birthday or not. I have been coveting it for far too long.

Hat obsession started several years back when I went to a dermatologist to see if I had any sun damage from this Caribbean living. She told me that people always forget to protect the top of their heads. With my fine and thin hair, I was easily convinced that hats were a necessity. Now I rarely leave the house during the day without one on.

This hat is made by Christys’ Crown Series. I love the other hat I have of the same brand. Very styley, high quality material, and unique yet classy design. That is why I know that this black one is a wardrobe necessity I will make my own.
